Style: Pacific Northwest

Living on Vancouver Island, I can't help but notice how much attention my neck of the woods seems to be getting. Undoubtedly, there is a certain appeal found in the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest, of boundless nature and undiscovered beaches. Naturally, however, a particular style has cropped up in the wake of this trendy area, that emulates it's laid back vibe. Here are a few items that I'm particularly fond of:

1. Rubber boots

Welcome to the temperate rain forest! You will find locals often prefer rubber boots over traditional winter boots, because our biggest concern is keeping the rain out of our shit. We will deal with snow when, and if, we have to.

2. Rain gear

As mentioned, we're living in a land of moisture. Therefore staying dry is a huge challenge, especially when you're out enjoying nature's bounty. Because of this, you'll see a lot of outdoor brands like The North Face, over down parkas and designer brands.

3. Tofino/Round Towels

Named after the iconic town of Tofino on my very own island (yeah, MY island), these round towels are meant to celebrate the beachy, laid back vibe that Tofino has come to represent. Designs are meant to emulate indigenous art that is found in the region, and their marketing relies heavily on the natural beauty of Tofino itself. Well played, friends.

4. Plaid

Hey girl, feel free to let out your inner lumberjack. Extra points if your plaid happens to be baggy and looks like you stole it from your boyfriend. Because statistically, you probably did.

5. Toques

While some might refer to them as "beanies," on this side of the border we refer to them as toques. And they are both cute and functional. Not to mention the fact that you can customize them with your favourite words and sayings! There's literally no downside, as long as you don't plan on taking them off.

6. Cowichan Sweaters

Honestly, these are the dopest sweaters around. And if they're authentic (woven by coast Salish Cowichan people) then no two are exactly the same. They're also known to be warm and water resistant, due to the lanolin found in the sheep's wool. Because they're made with geniune wool, the colours aren't dyed and never run, and if properly cared for they could last a lifetime. Having said that, they aren't cheap. Because they're handmade they cost a pretty penny. Also because of this, you'll see a lot of knock-offs...in my closet. But if you'd like to invest in a real sweater, find them here.

7. Lulu Lemon

Not a fan, personally, but I would be remiss if I didn't include eveyone's favourite brand of yoga pants. These pieces of overpriced elestane are all the rage, and have allowed the owner of the company to build a 50 ft dock for his yachts that have annoyed all of his neighbours.
